Sports Online:Mavs sign guard Cunningham

DALLAS (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks have signed first-round draft pick Jared Cunningham.

Terms were not disclosed.
Cunningham was the 24th overall selection in the NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was acquired by the Mavericks last month, along with the draft rights to Bernard James, the 33rd overall pick, and 34th overall pick Jae Crowder, in exchange for guard Kelenna Azubuike and the draft rights to the 17th overall pick in the draft, Tyler Zeller.
Cunningham is on the Mavericks' summer league team in Las Vegas, but has not played because of a strained hamstring.
Cunningham was selected first-team All-Pac 12 as a junior when he averaged 17.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.5 steals per game for Oregon State.

Sports Online:UNC changes structure of AD’s staff

Moves made to expand management of 28 varsity sports

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina has announced changes in responsibility for some athletic department’s staff members to expand the management of its 28 varsity sports.
Athletic director Bubba Cunningham announced the changes Thursday.
Cunningham selected senior associate AD Beth Miller and executive associate AD Larry Gallo as the school’s lead sports administrators.
Miller will oversee 13 sports, including cross country and men’s soccer. Gallo will supervise six, including baseball and women’s soccer. Four other senior associate ADs will oversee six sports.
Cunningham will be the primary administrator for football and men’s and women’s basketball.
Previously, the athletic director and Miller had been in charge of supervising all 28 sports.
Cunningham says the previous format worked well, as evidenced by the school’s history of success, but managing each program has grown more complex.

Sports Online:Blues sign forward T.J. Oshie to 5-year contract for reported $21 million

ST. LOUIS - The St. Louis Blues have signed forward T.J. Oshie to a five-year contract.
Terms were not disclosed but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the deal is worth nearly $21 million.
At 25, Oshie is among many young up-and-coming players for the Blues. He tied for the team lead with 54 points in 2011-12. He was third in goals with 19 and second in assists with 35. In four seasons, he has 63 goals and 112 assists for 175 points.
Oshie was a first-round pick (24th overall) for the Blues in the 2005 draft.

Sports Online:Kevin Kolb needs big Cardinals season to keep contract

Around the League is taking a look at each team's salary-cap situation heading into training camp. We continue with the Arizona Cardinals.
Adjusted Cap Number: $123.797 million
Cap Room Remaining: $4.552 million
Best Bargain: Despite missing a game early in the season, inside linebacker Daryl Washington led the Arizona Cardinals with 106 tackles, finishing the season strong with 23 tackles over the final two games. Washington added five sacks, third-highest total on the team, and had a team-high 16 tackles for a loss. Still on his rookie contract, the 2010 second-round pick will earn $540,000 in base salary and a $25,000 workout bonus and counts $983,750 against the team's cap this season. Washington will earn the league minimum in 2013 with no possibility of base salary escalation, as is the case with most contracts for second-round picks in the previous collective bargaining agreement.
Like Washington, 2010 draft pick John Skelton will make $540,000 in base salary this season (no workout), making him the third-highest paid quarterback on the roster behind Kevin Kolb ($8.5 million total compensation) and Richard Bartel ($615,000 base salary). If Skelton earns the starting job this summer, his salary would make him a bargain regardless of how he performs.
Potential Camp Casualty: Following last year's lockout, the Cardinals signed inside linebackerStewart Bradley to a five-year, $30 million contract. In a 4-3 system throughout his career, Bradley was unable to unseat Paris Lenon for a starting job and finished his first season in the desert with 21 tackles in very limited action on defense. Bradley took a 50 percent pay cut this offseason, reducing his base salary from $5 million to $2.5 million, which is partially guaranteed (for injury). If Bradley still struggles to pick up the 3-4, and some of the younger prospects close the gap, the Cardinals could part ways with him before the start of the season.
Contract Issue Looming In 2013: Restricted free agents LaRod Stephens-HowlingRashad Johnson and Gregory Toler will be unrestricted in 2013, but are not the biggest contract issue on the Cardinals for 2013. That distinction belongs to Kolb, who is in year two of a five-year, $62.1 million extension. Kolb will earn $20.5 million over the first two seasons of that deal, but will need to solidify himself as the starter this season to keep that deal intact. Kolb's base salaries swell to $9 million in 2013 (and $10 million each year after that) and has a $2 million roster bonus next offseason that pushes his cap number to $13.5 million. That's not backup quarterback money.

Sports Online:Miami Dolphins receivers want the call at quarterback

The three-way battle at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins figures to be the best storyline during the upcoming season of "Hard Knocks." The receivers on the team just hope it doesn't take all five episodes to reach a resolution.
"At some point we got to start working with one guy as opposed to the rest,” receiver Brian Hartlinetold the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
"You want to know sooner than later,” receiver Legedu Naanee said.
It's the conundrum involved in every quarterback competition. Coaches want to give every man a fair chance, but they risk hurting the ultimate winner. This is especially true when there are three quarterbacks involved, like in Miami and Seattle this year.
“You need situations where he throws a bad ball, but you bail him out. You need to gain confidence in that, and vice versa. You run a bad route, but he's got your back. You want to start feeling that," Hartline said. "You want to [have a chemistry] where he just throws the ball up and you begin to make plays for each other."
Rookie Ryan Tannehill is the only one that knew the Dolphins system before camp, and he's the biggest underdog for the starting job. David Garrard is learning a new system and new teammates.Matt Moore is trying to establish himself with a new coaching staff.
We agree with the Dolphins wideouts: The longer the quarterback battle lasts, the worse off the Dolphins will be.

Sports Online:Home run monster Ross does it again

BOSTON -- Cody Ross was the hero once again.
Ross belted a walk-off three-run homer to beat the White Sox, 3-1, on Thursday night at Fenway Park.
It was the third three-run jack for the outfielder in two games. He drove in a season-high six runs in Wednesday's 10-1 win, and didn't cool down on Thursday with another homer over the Green Monster.
"It's an incredible feeling, something that you really can't describe with words," said Ross of his first walk-off homer since Aug. 2, 2009, against the Cubs when he was a member of the Marlins. "The emotions that are going through your body, you just try to take it all in and try not to rush it and remember that, because you don't have very many opportunities to do that."
With David Ortiz out of the lineup for a third straight game, Ross has picked up the offensive slack for the Red Sox, who did get Dustin Pedroia back from the disabled list.
Over the years, late-inning heroics have typically fallen on Big Papi's broad shoulders. On Thursday, it was Ross' turn.
"I want to be the guy up every time in that situation," he said. "I always have my whole life. I just like that pressure and I like just being there in the moment. I can't really compare it to anything, it's just a great feeling especially when you come though and you're a hero. There's no better feeling."
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine is looking forward to more heroics from his right fielder.
"I love his smile, I love his swing, I love his energy," Valentine said. "And he's not getting traded. Don't want to start any rumors."
Carl Crawford started the rally with a leadoff single to right off Matt Thornton. Pedroia narrowly avoided a double play and reached first on a fielder's choice. Adrian Gonzalez followed with his second single of the game to set the table for Ross, who delivered off of Addison Reed.
When Ross crossed home plate, closer Alfredo Aceves showered him with a bucket of Gatorade.
"I needed something with some color," said Aceves, who picked up his first win of the year. "It's an exciting way to win."
The victory sealed a series win for Boston, which took three out of four from the American League Central-leading White Sox.
Facing a rookie left-hander for the second time in as many games, the Red Sox couldn't recreate their offensive explosion from Wednesday night.
White Sox starter Jose Quintana shut out the Red Sox over eight innings, but the Red Sox rallied against the Chicago bullpen in the ninth. It was the first time Boston scored all of its runs on a walk-off homer since June 4, 1995.
Boston knocked around Pedro Hernandez in his Major League debut on Wednesday for eight runs in four-plus innings with three homers. But Quintana did not suffer the same fate.
"I felt all my pitches were good," said Quintana, who retired 19 of the first 20 batters he faced. "It's one of those things that I was just trying to throw strikes in there and I had a good understanding of what the strong points are of some of these batters. I just try to throw the ball in the right place."
Red Sox starter Clay Buchholz did his part to keep the home team in the game. The right-hander was terrific in his second start since a stint on the disabled list, allowing one run in eight innings with six strikeouts. His only blemish was a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
He was in line to get a loss before Ross' bomb landed in the third row of the Monster Seats.
"You can't ever expect something like that to happen, but it makes you feel really good when it does," Buchholz said.
It was another strong outing for Buchholz, who is 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA and 45 strikeouts over his last seven starts since May 27.
"I feel pretty confident in most all of my pitches each time I go out and I think that plays a big key in going out and having success and keeping the team in the game in a game like this," he said.
Boston's best chance against Quintana came in the seventh after consecutive singles by Pedroia, Gonzalez and Ross loaded the bases for Will Middlebrooks.
The third baseman battled during an eight-pitch at-bat before grounding into a double play to end the threat.
Quintana allowed just one hit prior to the seventh, Pedro Ciriaco's two-out triple in the third. After that he promptly struck out Jacoby Ellsbury to end the scoring chance.
"He had some tough, tough spots there," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura. "Bases loaded and he gets the big double play. He's a mature kid. He's got everything you want as a pitcher. He has a lot of guts to go with it."
But Ross erased all that with his 16th homer of the year. He described the scene at home plate, where his teammates stood eager to congratulate him.
"I felt like a bunch of piranhas jumped on me and started attacking me," Ross said with a smile. "I look up and [Nick] Punto is staring right at me with this evil look on his face and he just grabs my jersey and is yanking on it. He became famous in St. Louis for that. They call him the shredder. So we got to meet the shredder tonight."

Sports Online:NBA Board of Governors approves expanded use of replay

LAS VEGAS -- The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved three additional uses of instant replay review for the upcoming 2012-13 season, the league announced today.
Instant replay may now be used:
• To review Flagrant 1 calls. Officials will now call a foul "Flagrant" on the floor and then use instant replay to make a determination as to the whether the foul is a Flagrant 1, Flagrant 2, or a common foul (if they decide after viewing replay that the foul was not Flagrant).
• To determine whether a defender was inside or outside the "restricted area" for purposes of block/charge calls during the last two minutes of regulation play or at any point during overtime.
•To determine the accuracy of goaltending calls made in the last two minutes of regulation play or at any point during overtime.
Each of these rules was recommended by the NBA's newly structured Competition Committee at its meeting on June 18.
The NBA first instituted instant replay prior to the 2002-03 season to review last second shots and fouls at the end of each period. With today's votes, the league will now use instant replay to review 14 different types of events.

Sports Online:After duel, Kemp's HR finishes Phils in 12th

LOS ANGELES -- There's been a lot of talk recently with the Phillies in town about how the Dodgers are in desperate need of adding someone with the caliber of a player like Cole Hamels or Shane Victorino.
While it's still to be seen if a guy like that is added to the Dodgers, the current team already has a pair of players who fit that bill in Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp, and the two of them showed Wednesday afternoon in a 5-3 victory in 12 innings at Dodger Stadium that this group can still get it done on its own.
In a game that lasted nearly 4 1/2 hours, Kershaw tossed eight innings of one-run ball and Kemp launched a fastball into the stands with one out in the 12th inning to help the Dodgers avoid getting swept by the Phillies.
On Tuesday, manager Don Mattingly chalked up the Dodgers' recent struggles to losing the sorts of close games they were winning all season. Well, Wednesday's victory was that sort victory the team has been missing as Los Angeles fought back after giving up two runs in the top of the 10th.
"You come from behind and win a game and it's one of those that ends up being a nice win for your club," Mattingly said. "And you never know if this is the day that starts us rolling the ball in the right direction."
While the win sends the team off on a 10-game road trip with some momentum after four straight losses, there was some cause for concern with the bullpen and offense. Kenley Jansen gave the team a scare in the top of the ninth when he loaded the bases after getting the first two batters out and Javy Guerra coughed up two runs in the 10th.
Offensively, the Dodgers only managed two hits through the first eight innings, largely thanks to a shutdown performance by Cliff Lee, who countered Kershaw by giving up only one run in eight innings.
"We needed it," Kershaw said. "We needed a win. We'll take them any way we can get them right now. We battled all the way through, and Matt came up huge in the end. It's a testament."
Kershaw did his best to put the Dodgers in position to salvage a game from the Phillies. He struck out seven and only allowed one run on an RBI single by Carlos Ruiz in the fourth.
But aside from a solo home run by Juan Rivera in the second, the Dodgers couldn't string together any sort of offense themselves. That is until the ninth inning, when Wednesday's pitching duel turned into a nail-biter.
With Kershaw and Lee pulled for pinch-hitters, both teams' bullpens struggled out of the gate loading the bases in the top and bottom of the ninth inning. After each failed to capitalize on its own opportunity to score, the Phillies and Dodgers finally got a dose of clutch hitting in the 10th.
In his first game back from the bereavement list, Guerra surrendered two runs on a chopper hit by Hunter Pence that bounced over the head of Jerry Hairston at third base to give Philadelphia the lead.
However, the Dodgers fought back in the bottom half against Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon when Luis Cruz led off the inning with a double and Bobby Abreu brought him home on a bloop single. A Tony Gwynn base hit put runners on the corners and Kemp delivered a game-tying single on a bang-bang play at first to beat out a throw from Jimmy Rollins.
"It's just one of those outings where you really can't do much about it," Papelbon said. "For the most part, I felt like I really made the pitches I wanted to make. Swinging bunts and bloop hits and infield hits and stuff like that, you can't really do much about them."
Kemp, who looked cautious at times in his first few games back from the disabled list, looked fast and healthy on the infield single that really tested out his hamstring.
"I feel really, really good," said Kemp, who missed 51 games while on the DL twice. "My legs are getting under me and I'm getting my timing back."
The infield single proved the first part and two innings later Kemp's no-doubt-about-it, walk-off home run proved the second.
"It felt good to help my team win," said Kemp, who was mobbed by teammates and tackled by catcher A.J. Ellis after rounding the bases. "It had been a while since I've played and it's always exciting to do that. It was a good time to do that at that moment."
Had the team not rallied against Papelbon and had Kemp not delivered the big blast, the joyous mood in the Dodgers' clubhouse would have been a lot different if Kershaw's gem had been squandered. But Los Angeles, which had lost 19 of its last 25 before Wednesday, has a win to be excited about for another day until the trade chatter starts up again.
"Hopefully we take this momentum into the East Coast and get this going again," said Kemp, who was still beaming from his sixth career walk-off homer.

Sports Online:Duke’s Johansen tabbed U.S. coach

Blue Devils coach will be assisted by Stanford’s Rick Schavone
Duke head coach Drew Johansen has been a U.S. National Team coach for seven years.

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke diving coach Drew Johansen has been named head coach of the United States Diving team that will be competing at the upcoming Olympic Games in London.
“Any time you get to wear USA on your back, it invokes all kinds of new emotions — patriotic as well as being recognized as one of the best athletes in the land,” Johansen said. “The Olympic dream brings us all to the sport in one way or another. I’m looking forward to it.”
Johansen has been a U.S. National Team coach for seven years, and previously served as head coach of USA Diving’s 2011 World Championship squad in Shanghai. Under his tutelage, Duke’s Abby Johnston and Nick McCrory have established themselves among the elite divers in the country and have also achieved success on the international stage, with both qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team. McCrory is set to vie for medals in the men’s individual and synchronized 10-meter platform events in London, while Johnston will pair with Kelci Bryant in the women’s synchronized 3-meter competition.
“One of my philosophies as a coach is to follow the philosophy of Olympism, which is in the charter for the International Olympic committee,” Johansen said. “By definition, it’s the blending of sport with culture and education. And that really defines Duke in big way — the blending of sport with culture and education. So one of the reasons I came to Duke was that Duke’s mission and the Olympic mission are very similar.”
Johansen will be assisted in London by Stanford diving coach Rick Schavone, as well as six other additional and personal coaches.
The women’s 3-meter synchronized competition at the 2012 Olympic Games will be contested as a straight final with five rounds of dives on July 29, while the men’s 10-meter synchronized event — also a straight final with six rounds of diving — is slated for Monday, July 30. The men’s individual 10-meter platform competition will begin with a preliminary round on Friday, Aug. 10, followed by the semifinals and finals on Saturday, Aug. 11. All diving events will be held at the London Aquatics Centre. For more information about the Olympic diving events, visit

Sports Online:NFL Divisional Power Rankings: Who's No. 1?

What's the best division in the NFL?
The Around the League gang -- Gregg Rosenthal, Dan Hanzus, Marc Sessler and Brian McIntyre -- each took a swipe at ranking the NFL's eight divisions from best (1 point) to worst (8 points). Our votes were cast, the numbers were tallied and here's what we came up with:
Divisional Power Rankings
DivisionVotesNotes
1. NFC South8Cam's emergence creates three contenders.
2. NFC North10Best quarterback division.
3. AFC North11Best defensive division.
4. NFC East14Division with the most drama.
5. AFC East17Top-heavy division in 2011.
6. AFC West26Competitive, but mediocre.
7. NFC West28Lot of young talent despite ranking.
8. AFC South30Colts and Jaguars are bottom feeders.
A few notes:
The NFC South grabbed our top-overall ranking because of voting consistency. McIntyre pegged them at No. 1, and nobody had the division ranked lower than No. 3.
Hanzus, who clearly watches a lot of Sunday Night Football, named the NFC East No. 1. Rosenthal and Sessler had the NFC North on top.
Very little love was shown to the AFC South, which received three last-place votes and McIntyre's sixth-place ballot (netting a 30 ranking, just two away from a worst-possible 32). There was a lot of agreement at the bottom of the list. Three divisions -- the AFC South, NFC West and AFC West -- didn't receive higher than a sixth-place ranking from any of the ATL writers.
Despite its consistently low ranking, the NFC West has made strides. The gap between, say, the NFC East and NFC West has closed dramatically. The NFC West would have been dead last, often by a wide margin, for much of the past decade. It's a division on the rise with the 49ers, Seahawks and Cardinals all possessing good defenses.
Back to the NFC East for a minute. It drew a varied response. Hanzus, of course, believes it's football's best. Sessler and McIntyre said No. 4, and Rosenthal placed it at No. 5. If an NFC East team fails to represent the conference in the Super Bowl, Hanzus has agreed to mow Jerry Jones' epic Dallas lawn until 2016.
Feel free to tell us where you disagree below.

Sports Online:Weber agrees to 14-year offer with Flyers

Nashville All-Star defenseman Shea Weber has agreed to an offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers, the Flyers announced in a Thursday morning press release.
TSN's Darren Dreger, who first reported the story, says the deal is for 14 years and more than $100 million. Those terms were not confirmed in the club's press release.
Nashville has a week to decide whether to match the offer. If they Predators opt not to do so, it is believed they will receive a package of four first-round draft picks from the Flyers, although compensation depends on the annual average value of the contract. The Flyers' first-round pick has been no higher than No. 20 in each of the past four drafts.
Dreger reported Nashville was working on a trade and it's believed several deadlines passed before the Flyers grew tired of waiting and Weber -- a restricted free agent -- signed the offer sheet.
Weber, the runner-up for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman, has one year remaining before he's eligible for unrestricted free agency. He turns 27 on Aug. 14 and is coming off a season in which he scored 19 goals and added 30 assists for 49 points. He was a First-Team All-Star for the second straight season and barely lost the Norris to Ottawa's Erik Karlsson.
He has played his entire NHL career with Nashville, which picked him in the second round (No. 49) in the 2003 NHL Draft.
The signing comes just two weeks after the Predators lost their other All-Star defenseman, Ryan Suter. He signed a 13-year, $98 million contract with the Minnesota Wild on July 4.

Sports Online:Hall of Famer Rodman finally meets father

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has finally met his estranged father after 42 years of separation, following an exhibition game in the Philippines.
Philander Rodman Jr., who has acknowledged fathering 29 children by 16 mothers, says he was happy and surprised that his son agreed to meet him late Wednesday. He tried to meet the basketball Hall of Famer during another game in Manila in 2006.
"It was great," he said Thursday of the first time he held his son's hands since they last met in December 1969.
"I've been trying to meet him for years. And then last night, boom, I met him. I was really, really happy and very surprised," he told The Associated Press.
The NBA "Alumni" team, which also included Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, and Mitch Richmond, played against former top professional Philippine Basketball Association players in the All-Star Challenge. The Alumni won.
Philander, who has been living in the Philippines for nearly 50 years, said he wanted to explain to his son that he didn't abandon his family in the United States, but they only had time for greetings and handshakes.
He said he spent only about three minutes with his son, who was also busy signing autographs.
"I really, really felt good," he said. "It's the beginning of something new."
He gave his number to his son who promised to call.
He said his son did not even want to talk about him six years ago, but he was encouraged to try again to meet him after Tuesday's press conference where the former Pistons and Bulls star invited him to watch Wednesday's game.
"I don't hate the guy that brought me into this world," Dennis Rodman told reporters. "The fact is, if I saw him, I'll just tell him, 'You know, you're a friend of mine.'"
During a break, with seconds left to the end of the game, Dennis Rodman grabbed a microphone acknowledged his father's presence and pointed to him in the arena.
The crowd applauded as the elder Rodman stood up wearing a red baseball cap that said "Yes, Dennis Rodman is my son."
The 71-year-old Vietnam War veteran now operates the Rodman's Rainbow Obamaburger restaurant in northern Angeles City.
He said his restaurant menu includes burgers with red, yellow and green colored buns and fries, colors associated with his flmaboyant son.

LAS VEGAS SUMMER LEAGUE: DAY 6 RECAP

LAS VEGAS — Adam Morrison looked like the Adam Morrison of old Wednesday night.
And as the player of few words put it, “the shots just went in.”
Morrison scored 23 points to help the Clippers to an 86-80 win over the Spurs, going 9-for-13 from the field (2-for-3 from beyond the arc) and was aggressive in both taking the ball to the hole and hitting the step-back jumpers that drew raves since his days at Gonzaga.
“I got it going, and guys did a good job passing me the ball,” said Morrison, who played 31 minutes for the second straight game in Las Vegas.
Morrison, trying to make a return to the NBA, latched on with the Brooklyn Nets in Orlando, averaging 5.2 points and 4.0 rebounds in 19.0 minutes per game. Here, though, he’s seeing more playing time and through two games is averaging 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds.
“I’m just trying show people I can play,” Morrison said. “Move around, show them I’m healthy. We’ll see what happens.”
Non-rookie of the day: Tobias Harris enters his second season trying to find a spot in the Bucks’ rotation. The small forward made a nice case Wednesday, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the Bucks’ 78-75 loss to the Wizards. Other notables: Jimmy Butler scored 24 points with seven rebounds in the Bulls’ 96-88 loss to the Raptors, a night after putting up 25 and seven in a loss to Boston.
Rookie of the day: The nod goes to John Henson, the Bucks’ No 14 pick, who had 20 points and nine rebounds. Henson looked nice in the low post, controlling the boards and showing off some nice interior moves. Henson missed Milwaukee’s first game with the flu, so this was the NBA’s first look at the long big man out of UNC. Other notables: Houston’s Royce White had a double-double in his final game of Summer League, tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds. Other Rockets stood out in their win over Chicago: Terrence Jones had 17 points and nine rebounds, Jeremy Lamb scored 16, while undrafted point guard Scott Machado had 20 points and six assists. Raptors rookieTerrence Ross scored 21 in Toronto’s win, while Atlanta’s John Jenkins scored 21 in his finale for the Hawks in their 67-61 win over Dallas.
Coming up: Two teams wrap up their Las Vegas schedules Thursday: Raptors (4 p.m. ET vs. Knicks, NBA TV) and Kings (6:30 vs. Celtics, NBA TV). Two other games will be televised on NBA TV: Clippers-Lakers at 8:30 and Bobcats-Nuggets at 10:30. Also showing on NBA TV replay: Cavs-Wolves at 3 a.m. ET.

Clippers' Griffin undergoes left knee surgery

Clippers forward Blake Griffin had arthroscopic surgery on Monday to repair the medial meniscus tear of his left knee that he injured during practice with the U.S. national team in Las Vegas.

The Los Angeles Clippers say Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic performed the surgery.
Griffin returned to Los Angeles last Thursday after experiencing discomfort in the same knee that bothered him during the playoffs. He will miss the London Olympics, but the Clippers say he should be ready for the start of the NBA season.

Mayo tweets that he's signing with Mavericks

DALLAS (AP) -- Free agent shooting guard O.J. Mayo tweeted that he "will be signing" with the Dallas Mavericks.

Soon after Mayo posted his note on Twitter late Monday night, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban sent out his own tweet that read, "Welcome to the family OJ. We are fired up !! MFFL Mavs/Mayo Fan For Life!"
In 301 games over the past four seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, the 6-foot-4 Mayo has averaged 15.2 points a game. Mayo was the third overall pick in the 2008 draft by Minnesota, who then traded him to Memphis in a seven-player deal.
Mayo started all 164 games his first two seasons in Memphis, but has since played off the bench. He started only 17 of 71 games played in 2010-11 and played in all 66 games without starting last season, when he still averaged 12.6 points and 2.6 assists per game.
There were no details of the contract or official confirmation from the team Monday night. ESPN, citing an unnamed source, said Mayo was getting a multiyear deal.
Dallas has restocked its roster after being unable to get Deron Williams to join his hometown team this offseason. Guards Jason Kidd and Jason Terry left in free agency a year after the Mavericks won their only NBA title, and 7-foot center Brendan Haywood was designated as their amnesty player.
The Mavs won the bid to claim two-time All-Star forward Elton Brand off amnesty waivers by Philadelphia on Friday and reached a one-year deal with 7-foot center Chris Kaman. Last week they also acquired point guard Darren Collison and wing player Dahntay Jones from Indiana in a trade for center Ian Mahinmi.
